all that was Bowker...www.onebigpicture.co.uk - go check it out! October 17 Writer's BlockOh dear, I think I've been suffering from 'Writer's Block'!! I've severely neglected this blog and sincerely apologise to all you loyal readers of it!
So, what's been happening. Well, one reason for my lack of blog writing is my newly found addiction to Facebook! (Look me up and ask me to be your friend to see my profile) and Bebo! You can view my profile here.
So, what of Baby Bowker. Well, unbelievably, he's now an incredible 5 months old!! How did that happen?! It doesn't seem that long ago that I was writing about him growing inside the womb! Gillian, as well as finding her addiction on Bebo, has recently found a new blog called BLW, or Baby Led Weaning for us thicko's!! In a nutshell, it's a blog site for mums, and I'm sure there must be dads on there somewhere too, maybe, who write about their experiences with baby led weaning. Basically, babies as young as Adam being given fruit and veg to suck on! Trust me, I saw this full on tonight and it's scary stuff, especially when he decides to bite the biggest chunk of carrot off you've ever seen. Your heart literally jumps into your mouth as you watch him chomp on this thing, constantly thinking it's going to choke him. But trust me, patience is the key. You give him a few seconds chomping, then fish it out with your fingers before he really does choke! The idea is that when we sit down for dinner, and usually sit him in his rocker with loads of toys whilst we wolf our food down and get indigestion before he starts to cry again, he sits in a high chair at the table with us and also eats, with us! It works a treat.
I took some amazing photos of him at the weekend (well, amazing in my eyes anyway, but he is my son afterall) which I'll hopefully post up here or on my Facebook at some point soon. We also had Libby with us, she's 2 weeks older than Adam and is my niece. She's such a happy wee soul and I can't wait (well, I can wait as I'm enjoying every minute of Adam at the moment) until they're both another year older playing together.
I recently did a photo shoot for a friend of mine who has a little boy called Jake who is 2. He has a cousin called Lucy who is a week older than him. It was absolutely amazing to see them both playing together, and don't get me wrong, it's not all sweetness and light all the time, but the photos I took showed them at their happiness together! You can see a couple of the photos on my website www.onebigpicture.co.uk or view all of them (temporarily) at www.photoboxgallery.com/onebigpicture
And that's just about it really, except to say that I had some amazing news last week, but I can't say anything until it's official! So, watch this space as I should be in a position to tell you all soon. August 13 Photography ramps upIt's been a wee while since I wrote about what's been happening in the world of my photography. Most of you will know that I have my own photography website - www.onebigpicture.co.uk - which I've had for nearly 3 years now. And, what set out as a bit of a hobby and a space where I could display my photos, it has now become a place where I can offer my services.
Something which I've always been interested in but haven't really done much of, is photographing people. In photographic terms, it's called portrait or lifestyle photography. It's the lifestyle slant which I've adopted as a natural way of capturing people. So, as you'll see from the new and improved one big picture website, it now focuses on selling the lifestyle side of things. The images you'll see on the home page (which change randomly each time you visit) now display a lifestyle image which I've taken. There's then a section on pricing and a lifestyle gallery which now features a slideshow.
My other photographs are now displayed in the galleries as usual, but they're further into the website than they were. As I do more lifestyle jobs, the photos will change to reflect this.
And in terms of bookings, I've got 4 jobs booked this month alone which is really encouraging. I also have a couple of weddings booked for next year, however, weddings is not what I want to do week in week out, but I'm happy to do the odd one. Although a relatively new area for me, I've read extensively about wedding photography and am clued up on what needs to happen. I just need some real experience of it now. I've done a couple of weddings in the past, but there's always been a professional photographer present too. So it's a whole new ball game now.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank those of you who have passed my details on to people who required a photographer. Some of them have come up trumps and turned into bookings.
Many of you will know that I was given the fantastic opportunity of displaying my photography in a coffee shop in Inverkip (near Greenock, Scotland). After only one week of displaying some of my work, it all sold. I've had other work on display since and this weekend I put some new images up on display for all to see. So, if you're ever in the area, why not pop in for a coffee and enjoy my work. You'll find my photographs at Cafe Melo in Inverkip (on the main road to Largs from Greenock). Their website is www.cafemelo.co.uk
Finally, Saturday 18 August sees Quarriers hold its annual Gala Day. Quarriers, for those of you who don't know, is the charity I work for in Scotland. And this year, as well as being official photographer and playing football in the tournament, I'll also have a stall selling much of my photography. So, if you're looking to fill that space on your empty wall, why not pop along and take a look. The Gala Day takes place 12-4pm this Saturday at Quarriers Village. 7 daysWell, that's me back from a week in the err....sun! Having had Adam this year, both Gillian and I decided it was a little too early to go abroad. So, our summer holiday ended up being a week in the Lake District. Little Nibthwaite to be precise, near Coniston. We stayed at a cottage that we'd been to on numerous occasions before, only this time, it was summer. And it was hot. Really hot!! It was so hot last Thursday, over 30oC, that we decided to just lounge in the back garden all day. It was like being abroad.
And, the nights were spent lighting the chimnea and a couple of bonfires and then relaxing under the stars drinking wine. Pure relaxation. I had my trusty camera with me, of course, and took loads of shots which I'll hopefully get time to go through this week and post up here for you all to see (well, not all of them, but just a nice selection).
One particular thing I did, was to take two large sticks, a piece of string and a selection of Adam's clothes to the beach. Yes okay, you might think I'm a little mad at this point, but wait until I tell you what I did with them. Armed with my camera, I basically set up a washing line of Adam's clothes. Using my 50mm lens, I managed to throw the sandy beach background out of focus to show the clothes blowing in the wind. They're pretty good if I say so myself, something for Adam to look at when he's older.
Today marked my first day back at work. It's actually going okay so far. But I have a mountain of work to begin and plough through over the next few weeks. This includes me being the official 'Quarriers' photographer where I have to plan and take photos representing all of the work we do. Pretty exciting stuff, but a lot of pressure on me to deliver as we usually get a professional in!! Well, I'm almost there aren't I?!! July 28 Has it really been that long?I keep getting to a point in my day where I say to myself 'I must update my blog'. Every now and then, a thought will pop into my head and I'll say to myself 'I must put that on my blog'. And here I am, actually sat down and updating my blog, a whole 3 weeks after I last updated it! Has it really been that long? This is what having a baby does to you. The whole sense of time goes completely out of the window! I've no idea where the last 3 weeks have gone to be honest.
Anyway, that said, Adam is doing very well indeed. Over the last few weeks both Gillian and I have persevered with a new 'routine' if you can call it that. The only problem with this 'routine' is that it takes your entire evening away from you. But I don't mind really. Adam gives you so much back in return that losing your evening pales into insignificance. Here's how it goes:
So yes, it's bloody hard work. But completely and utterly worth it. Wouldn't have it any other way. No way. July 03 Who'd 'ave 'em?Last night was a bit of a nightmare really in that my son Adam hardly slept a wink. And that, in turn, kept Gillian from sleeping, but also kept me awake too! So, I eventually rolled into work just after 10. Now you may be thinking 'lucky git' or something, but the way I saw it was that if I'd forced myself in for 9am then I'd be starting my day literally on my last legs. Whereas, an hours sleep before I went to work meant that I was at least a little refreshed, if somewhat still a little tired. It wasn't until around 3pm that it completely hit me and I was completely and utterly gazonked!! And it was around 4pm that my lovely wife Gillian gave me a ring at the office. There was the usual 'how are you', 'fine', 'how you feeling', 'very tired', conversation which lasted all of a couple of minutes. It was then that Gillian dropped a bombshell!! Okay, you'll turn round in a minute and think to yourself that it wasn't quite a bombshell, but to me, it was. Gillian told me that I'd better return home with a bit of enthusiasm. So I thought that she'd planned for us to go out to visit somebody, which wasn't exactly what I had in mind to do this evening. So I asked her what for and she replied, as the family are all going on holiday tomorrow, we have 2 weeks to get Adam into some kind of routine! Okay I thought. How? You come home, you cook dinner, you bath Adam, get him dressed, then we both go into the bedroom where he feeds and we all fall asleep. What?!!!!! You mean I've got to spend my days at work, then return home to then spend 4-5 hours in the bedroom until Adam falls asleep?!!! Unbelievable.
Now, being a good father and a good husband and generally a good bloke, I went along with this cunning plan. I really wasn't up for the being tied to my bedroom for the remainder of the evening with no light on so I can't even read! But, I can tell you that it hasn't quite gone like that. As I write this, it's now 8.30pm and Adam has been feeding for just over half an hour. And, in the past couple of hours, I've come home, cooked dinner, bathed Adam, got him ready for bed, emptied the steriliser of dummies, made up a Gavascon with milk and changed a nappy with an explosion in it! And removed a second explosion only 5 minutes later!
Adam's not quite asleep yet, but it's only a matter of time. I hope. We hope. Please please please Adam, sleeeeeeeeppppppp!!!! But, it's only the first night of this new routine. I really hope it works. It can't fail. Can it? |
